This is the one personality trait you need to embody. From a young age, Ramsey realized he needed to make money so that he could go out and do the things he wanted to do. When he asked his father for money to go spend time with his friends who were spending money, he said he needed money. His father corrected him. “You need a job, you don’t need money.” With this one, meaningful statement, Ramsey’s life was forever changed.
With his father to guide him, Ramsey went out at twelve years old and began his first business mowing lawns. He printed off business cards and went door-to-door in his neighborhood, asking if people were willing to receive his lawn-mowing services. “I had 27 lawns to cut at twelve years old.” Thus, his life as a working man began.
The thing is, people think that you need to be rich to be happy. You don’t. You need to be able to find your own way to succeed, to feel fulfillment with your efforts and what you have tried to do with your life. The best way to do this is to embody a strong work ethic and work hard to succeed. You don’t need money handed to you or you will never value the money you have. When you work for everything you have, when you are given paychecks instead of allowances, you will find a greater joy in the successes you have and you will find much more success.
Having a job is more than just having money. Through his early businesses in middle and high school, Ramsey learned vital characteristics and skills from “customer service” to “keeping your word.” These are things you learn out in the working world because there are consequences and there are rewards and you have to face reality. So forget your bank account. If you embody a strong work ethic and you find a job, you can find success if you use that work ethic to try your best in your job. The money will follow.
