Setting your alarm for a few hours earlier in the day will help to make a big change for you. In fact, waking up earlier will transform your life if you let it. Backed with science and research, Fitness came up with five reasons you should wake up earlier to encourage you to set that alarm and not hit snooze.
1) You’ll rock it at work
“Researchers at the University of Education in Heidelberg, Germany, found out that night folks tend to be more creative, but that the early birds usually have advanced problem-solving skills.” These are the skills that will help you catch the attention of your manager, your boss, or even your CEO. If you can jump into a situation and help the team come to a solution… you might just be on your way to moving up the ladder at work.
2) You’ll be more reliable
Reliability is one of the things that separate the men from the boys and women from the girls. The great news here is that you can develop reliability if you work on it. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine conducted a study that found, “nighttime people are less reliable, less emotionally stable, and more likely to have addictions.” If you’re missing deadlines or even just lunch dates, maybe it’s time to start setting that alarm (“opportunity”) clock and rolling out of bed with the birds so that you can be reliable and productive.
3) You’ll be more alert
This one is easy.
This one is easy.
“Scientists at the University of Alberta found that an early bird’s brain is more excitable, and thus more alert, at 9 p.m.” This is great for people who wake up early because it allows them to be more engaged and more active in your work environment – not to mention at home. If you’re not a morning person, don’t be sad. “Research shows that over time, you can become a morning person, change your habits, and reap the job-promoting, health-boosting benefits.” What are you waiting for? Getting out of bed earlier in the day is just going to give you more time and energy to tackle the tasks at hand.
4) You’ll stress less
Who wants to stress? Not many people. The thing is, stress can be managed if you wake up earlier to begin your day. “A study at the University of London found that those who greeted the day by 7:00am, on average had a lower chance of being stressed, depressed and overweight.” You can transform your stress as well as your mental and physical state if you take the right steps. When you wake up late you have less time to prepare for that early meeting and less time to accomplish everything you want to accomplish before dinnertime. Plus, if you’re more alert in the early hours you will likely start accomplishing more in your day!
5) You’ll lose more weight
Ah, the weight struggle. When you sleep too much, your body starts to store more fats. “Studies show that working up a sweat in the early hours of your day speeds up your metabolism, helping you burn more calories throughout the day, resist junk-food cravings, and reach for healthier options.” It is up to you to make the decisions in your life that will benefit your mental and physical health, but this is one easy way that will help you to transition into a better mental and physical state – thus helping to transform your life into a much more fulfilling one.
